Immunoantibiotics: A Combinatorial Approach for the Development of Treatments of Infections in the 21st Century

The classical development of vaccines has been to attenuate the organism and administer a primary immunization followed by one or multiple booster injections. This approach worked very well for the classical “childhood” diseases. Today we face a multitude of problems with this paradigm. The development of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria, emerging viral infections, and problematic pathogens has raised the bar for vaccine development. For example, the lack of effective vaccines to certain bacteria as well as the existence of antibiotic resistant strains leaves a void in the clinician’s armamentarium for treatment of infections.
